SUMMARY:Historical Materialism London 2025
DESCRIPTION:Ian Allinson will be speaking as part of a panel titled “Left strategy: mobilising\, organising and revolution“. \nBuilding on Jane McAlevey’s distinctions between mobilising and organising and between structural and self-selecting organising\, Ian Allinson argues for considering three types of organising: \n\nPrimary organising: involving new people\nSecondary organising: working with those already in a movement to influence political and organisational development\nSustaining and developing revolutionary organisation\n\nSecondary organising is too often dominant on the left\, while a minority focus excessively on revolutionary organisation. Thinking about the three types can help revolutionaries struggle to achieve a better mix. \nWithout primary organising the working class can’t build real power\, and without engaging in it revolutionaries retreat to a lefty bubble and lose touch with the experiences\, concerns and views of the majority of the working class. As the experience of struggle is a key factor in challenging the ruling ideas in society and developing better ones\, attempts to build revolutionary organisation divorced from struggle are doomed to fail. \nWhen revolutionaries take part in struggle\, we come under pressure to accommodate to those around us and to neglect building revolutionary organisation – ‘liquidating’ ourselves. The development of collective revolutionary organisation is essential not just because of its anticipated role in a revolutionary situation\, but to support its members in resisting pressures to politically accommodate. \nOther panellists will discuss trying to achieve a good balance of the three types of organising\, drawing lessons from their experiences of organising around housing in London and around issues from pensions to Palestine and Trans+ oppression in a manufacturing workplace.

SUMMARY:What would it mean for UNISON to truly be an organising union?
DESCRIPTION:Ian Allinson will be speaking at this Workers Can Win event\, which is a fringe meeting for UNISON’s National Delegate Conference but open to all. \nUNISON has begun to change for the better. The impact of the Organising To Win strategy is growing\, reflected in increased membership and numbers of activists. Improved strike pay is enabling members in disputes to take the sustained action sometimes needed to win. \nBut there is a long way to go. UNISON’s communications often still encourage members to passively expect a service rather than to exercise collective power. Our industrial action processes are amongst the slowest and most bureaucratic in the movement. And we often struggle to overcome the anti-union ballot thresholds that Starmer has set no timescale to repeal. \nJoin this discussion about what organising really means and how UNISON could truly become an organising union. \n\n54 St James St is near Chinatown and Liverpool One. From the ACC cross Queens Wharf bridge\, go straight ahead up Blundell Street and turn right into St James St (0.6 miles). \n\nThanks to UNISON Greater Manchester Transport and Greater Manchester Mental Health branches\, which have sponsored the event.

SUMMARY:Resisting the latest anti-strike laws
DESCRIPTION:Ian Allinson will be speaking at this meeting hosted by Unite London Digital and Tech branch. All Unite members are welcome. \nThis new law introduces minimum service level (MSL) regulations in six industries: health\, fire and rescue\, education\, transport\, border security\, and nuclear decommissioning and waste. The regulations specify the level of service to be maintained during industrial action\, and employers can then apply this to any action taken by their workers by making the trade union ‘break its own strike’. So far employers in one high-profile dispute\, of ASLEF train drivers\, backed down from using the laws\, but we can’t be complacent. \nThey are inviting all members of Unite the Union to join the first half of their branch meeting on Thursday 14 March at 6.30pm to discuss this attack on our rights.

SUMMARY:Can Workers Win? at the University of Manchester
DESCRIPTION:Can Workers Win? An open discussion with Ian Allinson\, author of Workers Can Win: a Guide to Organising At Work \nThis teach-out runs as part of UMUCU’s extensive programme of free events and workshops running parallel to the strikes which imagine an alternative university. Can Workers Win is an invitation to us all to reflect on questions around our organising as a union\, and to think about it in the context of wider worker struggles. Joining us in person is local organiser and author Ian Allinson\, who will have discounted copies of his book with him\, alongside UMUCU’s Morgan Powell and Molly Geidel. \nHow do we build power in a workplace? How can we link up better with other struggles? How should we think about strategy? What does it mean to win\, and how do we get there? Join us to discuss these questions\, and to ask your own questions about organising in relation to our strikes\, and beyond. \nAccess info for the venue can be found here: https://manchesteracademy.net/info/accessibility \nDownload a poster. Share the Facebook event.

SUMMARY:Workers Can Win - online with the Ella Baker School of Organising
DESCRIPTION:Sign up for this online session\, hosted by the Ella Baker School of Organising. \nIan Allinson has long been a friend of the Ella Baker School and now he has written a book on union organising from a workplace perspective. At a time when the cost of living crisis is forcing workers to use their power in trade unions to try to ensure that their wages keep up with spiraling costs\, we are very happy to invite Ian and a panel to discuss ‘Workers Can Win! A Guide to Organising At Work’ \nDrawing on more than 20 years of organising experience\, the book combines practical techniques with an analysis of the theory and politics of organising and unions. It offers insight into tried and tested methods for effective organising. It deals with tactics and strategies\, and addresses some of the roots of conflict\, common problems with unions and the resistance of management to worker organising. \nWe will be inviting an expert panel to discuss the book and\, as ever\, this will be an interactive session. \n\n \n \n \n SlideBOOK CONTENTS \nINTRODUCTION \nBUY

What makes it exactly the same and how can we use industrial action for real\, lasting empowerment of communities? \nAfter a year during which one UK labour force after another has announced strike action\, we welcome you to delve into a conversation about all kinds of picket lines\, how they are kept separate and how they can be connected in order to achieve not only better terms for workers\, but systemic change for all.
